<description>"Play a vibration in the rhythm of the universe" - Stockhausen, Aus den sieben Tagen (1968)

Noise music, physical performance, improvisation, sonic exploration, materiality.

Rummaging is a performance practice concerned with reconciling these
ideas. It brings performer and objects together to create visceral
noise.

The practice typically involves placing objects in a container and
manipulating these objects with the hands. Through the collision of the
objects and due to their acoustic properties, a percussive noise music
is produced. &#38;nbsp;Rummaging enables the
performer to create a sound-world built on micro-gestures created by the chaotic interaction of objects, in a manner free from impurities and obfuscations.

Developed by myself and artist Henry Collins, rummaging evolved from
our first performance together at a free improvisation workshop; the
encounter becoming increasingly physical as Henry augmented the drum kit
that I was playing with assorted objects found in the performance space
until playing in any ‘normal’ sense became impossible. The resulting
junk pile became my instrument. As our musical work as a duo continued, it became apparent that the moments
that gave the greatest satisfaction were the fleeting and unpredictable
moments of complexity that arose: micro-gestures that would appear and
disappear, flittering moments where chance rhythms presented themselves
and spoke to each other in ways outside of our conscious intention.
Chaos, in the true sense of the word.
Henry had coined the term ‘rummaging’ to describe
an embryonic version of what became the practice, and through further performances,
 different techniques were explored.
Rummaging has taken different
settings and configurations; from art galleries to raves, solo, duo and
in groups, with short physically intense performances lasting only
minutes, to durational works lasting three hours or more. ‘Orchestras’ of rummagers have been conducted, and whole rooms filled with junk. Consequently, a
distinctive practice has emerged.

&#60;img width="3264" height="2448" width_o="3264" height_o="2448" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/161c6dc3b702d84ea0a093c7881f8bf9cb0a58ecd6e75685e6ec04f754e9fa8d/orch.jpg" data-mid="133022719" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/161c6dc3b702d84ea0a093c7881f8bf9cb0a58ecd6e75685e6ec04f754e9fa8d/orch.jpg" /&#62;
&#38;nbsp;The restraint imposed by rummaging is intended to free the mind from
the conscious decisions involved in the creation of improvised music.
The complexity that arises from the chance collisions of objects exceeds
anything that could be created by the human hand. By removing the
element of control, the player is free to focus on the resulting mesh of
sounds. Allowing the mind to become saturated with the complexity of
the sonic information provided by rummaging can facilitate achieving a
clarity of thought. This re-enforces one of the principal aesthetic aims
of rummaging; the attainment of purity through chaos.
As we sought to refine our ideas, &#38;nbsp;obstructions to the singular expression of our intent were removed and based on the original aims and objectives of the practice, a mission statement was drawn up:
&#60;img width="1000" height="776" width_o="1000" height_o="776" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0fa7d0245f3b64edfa17c2cc440c4cb3af95938ace9f8e46c197e396c21c5571/statement.jpg" data-mid="133022680" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0fa7d0245f3b64edfa17c2cc440c4cb3af95938ace9f8e46c197e396c21c5571/statement.jpg" /&#62;(text version)
In the years since this statement was first written down, and as the
practice has been developed through performances, it's safe to say that
artistic license has been applied to many of these points.
Performances have used an entire room as the rummaging vessel, and
objects manipulated with entire bodies instead of hands. Performances
have been so physically intense that durations of more than a few
minutes have been impossible. Rummaging orchestras have consisted of many
performers, and different timbres and volumes used to
create textures and compose performances. In a broader sense, rummaging has become an in "instrument" in its own right, alongside other
performers and instruments. It may be required that the established conventions
for rummaging are freely ignored in the process of musical
experimentation, but to ignore these
conventions however, it’s important to first recognise and understand their original
purpose. In my own work, in recent years I have felt a shift in emphasis towards the objects themselves: what they stand for and what they have to say. Rummaging has become a way to explore the body, and the relationship of humans to the things that we surround ourselves with.

<description>Rummaging was developed through intuition: through experimentation,
but crucially through practice. Its evolution was an organic response to
a need to create a music that allowed a particular type of expression.
At the time of inception and during its early days, the practice existed
for its own sake, without theoretical consideration. It was only later
on, reflecting on an established practice, that it started to become
apparent there was a strong theoretical background that could be
explored, from ideas of physicality and viscerality, to relationships
with materials and objects.

A desire to expore this in the gaps has led to my undertaking a
practice-based PhD (at Bath Spa Universitry, supervised by Matthew Sergeant). My intention is to look at how the practice might be developed, to enquire, explore and codify, to look at what it is
that makes rummaging work as a performance practice, to investigate and
analyse through various philosophical and theoretical lenses, and
ultimately to uncover new potentials and new directions for the
practice.&#38;nbsp;&#60;img width="1000" height="750" width_o="1000" height_o="750" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/2249ccb95ccf3bc956786d3b8e021d559154bbd44cab6cdf7dc608bbd8877cee/rumrec-1.jpeg" data-mid="133159373" border="0" data-scale="66" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/2249ccb95ccf3bc956786d3b8e021d559154bbd44cab6cdf7dc608bbd8877cee/rumrec-1.jpeg" /&#62;

Notes:Mostly larger objects - a lot of metallic pieces which give a rich sound
 - what I would describe as a 'traditional' rummaging timbre (see
video). I've had most of these objects for several years so on top of
the familiar acoustic properties there's definitely a sense of nostalgia
 attached to this selection.

The box is my most often used box - I originally built it for
Supernormal festival in 2016, and carpet-lined it at the end of 2020 in
order to dampen the sound of the wood, which I had come to see as
dominating the box. The dampened box still imparts a very woody resonant
frequency, but now allows the sound of the objects to speak much more
clearly..embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }

Notes:All materials scavenged from the village of Allenheads and surrounding countryside.

A very musical sounding box - the resonant frequencies of the objects and the basin producing what sounds like a major third.

	Container:Cardboard box

Ingredients:Two clementinesTwo red onionsOne white onionOne Royal Gala appleOne Golden Delicious appleSix celery stalksThree spring onionsThree carrotsOne red potato

	Notes:
The softer fruit and veg (clementines, spring onion and celery) fell apart quite quickly, though the rest held their forms, and actually were quite rough on the hands (onion skin under finger nails, and I bent a nail back on either an apple or the potato). It was interesting how my hands adapted to take into account what it was they grabbed - loosening grip for the apples and potatos but maintaining a firm hold with the clementines and celery - which caused them to break up..embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }

	Notes:
Box and majority of items (some of the metal items were brought in advance) scavenged from around the proximity of the Cube Cinema, Bristol, for a performance on 27/11/21.

A very loud box, due to the thick plastic container (further enhanced by the use of a microphone).
