These drawings were created using simple automata consisting of a weighted motor and a pen, left to run its course in a box lined with paper. Some of the behaviour is easily explained - the ‘laps’ of the paper where the automata was bouncing against the edges of the box, for example, or the spirals as the weighted motor caused the automata to rotate - but many of the drawings contain intricate designs and sudden stylistic shifts. I can’t confess to understanding how such a simple mechanism results in such complex behaviour. These works raise interesting questions around agency. Who is the artist here: me, or the automata?
