Some early experiments with drawing automata. These were created using simple automata consisting of a weighted motor and a pen, left to run its course in a box lined with paper. Some of the behaviour is predictable - the ‘laps’ of the paper where the automata was bouncing against the edges of the box, for example, or the spirals as the weighted motor caused the automata to rotate - but many of the drawings contain intricate designs and sudden stylistic shifts that seem to defy easy explanation.
